What is the Atharvaveda?

Named after the ancient sages Atharvan and Angiras, the Atharvaveda is the Veda of ordinary life. Where the other three Vedas focus on the great public sacrifices, this one is full of prayers for a family's daily needs: health, healing, long life, a harmonious home, good harvests, safety and success. It also contains some of the most philosophical hymns in the Vedas.

It has 20 books (kandas), about 730 hymns and about 6,000 mantras in the main Shaunaka recension. A second recension, the Paippalada, survived in Kashmir and Odisha. Its priest is the brahman, who silently oversees the whole yajna and corrects mistakes, which is why it is also called the Brahmaveda. Its Upanishads, the Mundaka, Mandukya and Prashna, are central to Vedanta.

Translation

Great truth, strong cosmic order, commitment, discipline, prayer and sacrifice: these hold up the earth. May she, the mistress of what was and what will be, make wide space for us.

In simple words

The earth is not held up by an elephant or a turtle, says this verse, but by values: truth, natural law, commitment and self-discipline. When people abandon these, the world becomes unstable.

I make you one in heart and one in mind, free from hatred. Love one another as a cow loves her newborn calf. Let brother not hate brother, nor sister hate sister. United and of one purpose, speak to each other with kind words.

In simple words

Three thousand years old, and still the best family advice: love without conditions, no rivalry between siblings, shared goals and kind speech. The image of a cow licking her new calf captures selfless love.

Translation

May we have no fear from friends, no fear from enemies, no fear from the known, no fear from the unknown. May we be fearless by night and by day. May all directions be my friends.

In simple words

A short prayer to say when you feel anxious. Fear comes from many sides, people we know and things we can't see. The prayer ends by asking that the whole world feel friendly.

Truth alone triumphs

Mundaka Upanishad 3.1.6

satyam eva jayate nānṛtaṃ satyena panthā vitato devayānaḥ |

Translation

Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood. By truth is laid the divine path.

In simple words

This line from an Atharvaveda Upanishad is India's national motto, written beneath the Lion Capital of Ashoka on every currency note and government seal.

Om: this syllable is all this. Here is its explanation. The past, the present and the future: all of it is Om alone.

In simple words

The Mandukya, the shortest principal Upanishad, uses the three sounds of Om to explain three states of consciousness, and the silence after Om to point to the Self. See the diagram below.
