Swastika

From su (good) and asti (it is): "may all be well." An ancient sign of good fortune, drawn in red on doorways, account books, wedding cards and at the start of any new venture, often with four dots. It is also sacred to Jains and Buddhists. In the 20th century the Nazi party took a tilted black version as its emblem, which is why it is misunderstood in the West; the Hindu swastika has a separate, thousands-of-years-old meaning of blessing and well-being.

The lotus grows in muddy water yet stays clean, so it stands for living in the world without being stained by it (Gita 5.10). Lakshmi and Sarasvati sit on lotuses, and Brahma is born from a lotus that grows from Vishnu's navel.
