What is Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism)?
Sanātana means "eternal, without beginning or end." Dharma is harder to translate. It means the natural order that holds the world together, and also the right way for a person to live within it: doing your duty, being truthful, and not causing harm. So Sanatan Dharma means "the eternal way of living rightly." It is the traditional name for what the world today calls Hinduism.
Unlike many religions, it has no single founder, no single holy book, and no single head. It grew over thousands of years through the insights of sages called rishis, and it welcomes many paths to the same truth. You can worship God with form, without form, through knowledge, through action, or through love, and all of these are accepted.
This guide follows the traditional view where it explains beliefs, and gives the dates historians use where it talks about history. Different schools (Vedanta, Arya Samaj, Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakta and others) interpret many verses differently. The translations here follow the commonly accepted meaning.

Shruti and Smriti: what was heard, what was remembered
All Hindu scriptures fall into two families. Shruti ("that which is heard") is revealed knowledge that the rishis are believed to have heard in deep meditation. It is the highest authority. Smriti ("that which is remembered") was written by human authors to explain and apply Shruti through law, story and poetry.

The Four Vedas
Veda comes from the Sanskrit root vid, "to know." The Vedas are the oldest texts of India and among the oldest in the world. For more than three thousand years they were passed down by memory, from teacher to student, with special recitation methods that kept every syllable and tone exact. UNESCO recognised this Vedic chanting tradition as an intangible heritage of humanity in 2008.
Rigveda
The Veda of praise. Hymns to the forces of nature as divine powers: Agni (fire), Indra (strength, rain), Surya (sun), Varuna (cosmic order), Ushas (dawn). It also asks deep questions about how the universe began. The oldest of the four.
Two branches: Shukla (white) and Krishna (black) · Shukla has 40 chapters
The Veda of action. A handbook for the priest who performs the yajna (fire ritual): what to say and do at each step. Its last chapter is the famous Isha Upanishad.
About 1,875 verses · nearly all taken from the Rigveda
The Veda of song. Rigvedic verses set to melody, sung by the udgatri priest. Indian classical music traces its roots here. In the Gita, Krishna says "among the Vedas, I am the Samaveda" (10.22).
20 books · about 730 hymns · about 6,000 mantras20 काण्ड · लगभग 730 सूक्त · लगभग 6,000 मन्त्र
The Veda of daily life. Prayers for health, healing, long life, a happy home, farming and protection, along with hymns about the earth and the nation. Ayurveda draws on it.
Each Veda moves from the outer (ritual) to the inner (philosophy). The Upanishads come last, so they are also called Vedanta, "the end of the Veda."

The oldest Veda opens with fire. Fire was the link between people and the divine: whatever is offered into it is carried upward. Fire also stands for energy, effort and the light of knowledge, which is why we still light a diya or a havan at every important moment.

A ripe cucumber falls from the vine easily, with no pain. The prayer asks for that kind of ripeness in life: to grow fully, let go of fear, and pass on peacefully when the time comes. People chant it for healing and courage.

This shows how the Samaveda works: it takes a Rigveda verse and turns it into a song. The same words, sung with melody, become a different kind of prayer, one you feel as much as understand.
The Bhumi Sukta has 63 verses of love for the earth: its rivers, mountains, plants and all its peoples. If the earth is our mother, we should not harm her. It is one of the earliest environmental prayers in the world. That is also why many Hindus touch the ground before stepping out of bed in the morning.
Upa-ni-shad means "to sit down near," the way a student sat close to a teacher to hear deep truths. Over 200 Upanishads are known; tradition lists 108, and about 11 are considered principal: Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Chandogya, Brihadaranyaka and Shvetashvatara. Their big question is: Who am I really, and what is the reality behind everything?

Dharma
Right action, duty and the natural order. A river's dharma is to flow, fire's is to burn, and a person's is to do their duties honestly and kindly. Dharma changes with your role: a parent, a student and a doctor each have their own.
Karma
Every action has a result, like a seed that grows into a plant. Good actions bring good results, harmful ones bring suffering, in this life or a later one. Karma is not fate: your choices today shape your tomorrow.
Atman
Your true Self: not the body, not the mind, but the pure awareness inside that never dies. The body is like clothing the soul wears.
Brahman
The one infinite reality behind all things. When given form and worshipped with love, the same reality is called Ishvara or Bhagavan: Vishnu, Shiva, Devi and others.
Samsara
The soul passes through many births. Its karma decides the next life, much as today's actions decide tomorrow's circumstances.
Moksha
Freedom from the cycle of birth and death: knowing your true Self and resting in lasting peace and joy. It is the final goal of life.
Rta
The cosmic order the Rigveda speaks of: the sun rises, seasons turn, rivers flow. Living by dharma means living in tune with that order.

Four goals of life (Purusharthas)
Sanatan Dharma does not ask everyone to renounce the world. It accepts four healthy goals: Dharma (living rightly), Artha (earning wealth honestly), Kama (enjoying love, art and pleasure), and Moksha (spiritual freedom). Wealth and pleasure are good, as long as they are pursued within dharma.

The Song of God
The Bhagavad Gita
Seven hundred verses in 18 chapters, inside the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the warrior Arjuna loses heart: he does not want to fight his own relatives. His charioteer, Lord Krishna, teaches him how to act rightly without fear or selfishness. The Gita brings together karma, bhakti and jnana, and is the most widely read Hindu scripture today.

You have a right to your work, but never to its fruits. Do not let the result be your motive, and do not become attached to inaction.

A student should study with full attention, without being frozen by worry about marks. Put your whole heart into the effort, which you control. The outcome depends on many things, so don't let fear of it stop you. And don't use this as an excuse to do nothing.
Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, O Arjuna, I manifest myself. To protect the good, to destroy evil, and to re-establish dharma, I appear age after age.

This is the idea of the avatar: God does not abandon the world. When things go badly wrong, the divine steps in, as Rama, as Krishna, and in many other forms. It is a promise of hope.
The Vedas teach through mantras; the epics teach through stories. Most people in India first learn dharma not from the Vedas but from these two great tales, told by grandparents, performed in Ramlila, and watched on television.

The longest poem in the world. Two sets of cousins, the five Pandavas and the hundred Kauravas, quarrel over a kingdom. After cheating, exile and failed peace talks, they fight the 18-day war at Kurukshetra. The Gita is spoken just before the battle begins.
Life is complicated: good people make mistakes and dharma is often hard to see. The epic says of itself: "what is here may be found elsewhere; what is not here is nowhere."

The Puranas
Purana means "ancient." These books retell Vedic truths through stories of gods, avatars, saints and kings, so that everyone can understand them. They describe creation and destruction of the universe, family lines of kings, the ten avatars of Vishnu, the glory of Shiva and of Devi, holy places, fasts and festivals. Most of the stories behind Hindu festivals come from the Puranas.

The ten avatars of Vishnu (Dashavatara)
Many people notice that the order reads like a story of life developing: from a fish in water, to an amphibian, to a land animal, to half-human, to a small human, and on to full human beings.
