How to read the Gita

The Bhagavad Gita, "the Song of the Lord," is a conversation of 700 verses between Krishna and Arjuna, found in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. It is set on a battlefield, but its real subject is how to live: how to act rightly when life is confusing, how to deal with fear and grief, and how to find God.

Traditional teachers divide its 18 chapters into three sets of six. The first six focus on action, the middle six on devotion, and the last six on knowledge. The map below lets you jump to any chapter. Each chapter has a short summary and its most important verses.

Arjuna's Despair

47 verses · Karma section47

The two armies stand ready at Kurukshetra. The blind king Dhritarashtra asks his minister Sanjaya, who has been given divine sight, to describe what is happening. Arjuna asks Krishna to drive the chariot between the armies. Seeing his grandfather Bhishma, his teacher Drona, cousins and friends on the other side, Arjuna is overcome with grief. His bow slips from his hand and he sits down, refusing to fight.

Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjaya, gathered on the holy field of Kurukshetra, eager to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do?

In simple words

The Gita begins with the word dharma. Many teachers read the battlefield as the human heart, where good and selfish tendencies fight every day. Notice that the king says "my sons" and "Pandu's sons": the attachment that divides "mine" from "theirs" is the root of the whole war.

The Yoga of Knowledge

72 verses · Karma section72

Arjuna becomes Krishna's student and asks for guidance. Krishna's teaching begins: the soul is eternal and cannot be killed, so do not grieve. Then he introduces karma yoga, acting without attachment to results, and ends by describing the sthitaprajna, the person whose mind stays steady in joy and sorrow. Many call this chapter the Gita in miniature.

The soul is never born, nor does it ever die. It did not come into being, and it will not cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient. It is not killed when the body is killed.

Your body changes from baby to child to old person, but "you" remain. That unchanging you is the soul. Knowing this removes the deepest fear, the fear of death.

Arjuna asks: if knowledge is higher than action, why fight? Krishna explains that no one can live even a moment without acting. The answer is not to stop working but to work as an offering (yajna), for the good of the world (lokasangraha), without selfish desire. At the end Arjuna asks what drives people to do wrong; Krishna names desire and anger as the enemy.

42 verses · Karma section42

Krishna reveals that he taught this yoga long ago to the Sun god Vivasvan, and that he takes birth again and again to protect dharma. He explains that action done with knowledge does not bind: a wise person sees "inaction in action and action in inaction." Many kinds of yajna are described, and knowledge is called the greatest purifier.

Krishna gives practical instructions for meditation: a clean, quiet place, a steady seat, body straight, gaze inward, mind fixed on the Self. Balance in food, sleep and activity is essential. When Arjuna says the mind is as hard to control as the wind, Krishna agrees and gives the method: practice and detachment. He promises that no sincere effort is ever wasted.

The Royal Knowledge and Royal Secret

34 verses · Bhakti section34

Krishna calls this the king of knowledge and the king of secrets: the whole universe rests in him, yet he is not bound by it. He accepts any offering made with love, however small. He declares that his devotees never perish, and that the path of devotion is open to everyone, whatever their birth or past.

42 verses · Bhakti section42

Arjuna asks how to recognise God in the world. Krishna lists his vibhutis, the places where his glory shines brightest: among lights he is the sun, among rivers the Ganga, among mountains the Himalaya, among words the syllable Om, among seasons spring. He concludes that whatever is excellent, beautiful or powerful comes from a spark of his splendour.

The Field and the Knower of the Field

34 verses · Jnana section34

The third part of the Gita turns to knowledge. The body is called the field (kshetra), where actions are sown and their results harvested. The one who knows the field, the conscious Self, is the knower of the field (kshetrajna). Krishna lists the qualities that make up real knowledge, such as humility, non-violence, patience and purity, and explains prakriti (matter) and purusha (spirit).

20 verses · Jnana section20

Krishna describes the world as an eternal ashvattha (sacred fig) tree, upside down, with its roots above in God. Each soul is an eternal part of God. Everyone's faith matches their nature, O Arjuna. A person is made of their faith: as their faith is, so are they.

In simple words

What you deeply believe in and value shapes who you become. Choose carefully what you put your faith in.

Discipline of speech

anudvegakaraṃ vākyaṃ satyaṃ priyahitaṃ ca yat | svādhyāyābhyasanaṃ caiva vāṅmayaṃ tapa ucyate ||

Translation

Words that do not upset others, that are true, pleasant and helpful, together with regular recitation of scripture, are called the discipline of speech.

In simple words

Before you speak, ask four questions: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it helpful? Will it hurt someone needlessly? That is a spiritual practice you can do all day.

Liberation through Renunciation

78 verses · Jnana section78

The longest chapter brings together the whole teaching. Krishna explains true renunciation, the three kinds of knowledge, action, doer, intellect, determination and happiness, and the idea of doing one's own duty as worship. Then he gives his final, most secret teaching: surrender to me completely. Arjuna's confusion is gone; he picks up his bow and declares, "I will do as you say."

Translation

Setting aside all other duties, take refuge in me alone. I will free you from all sins. Do not grieve.

In simple words

Called the charama shloka, the final verse of the teaching. After all the instructions, Krishna says: you don't have to carry it all alone. Trust me fully. Teachers explain it differently, but all agree it is a message of complete trust and comfort.

Where Krishna and Arjuna areयत्र योगेश्वरः कृष्णः

Gita 18.78

yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanurdharaḥ | tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama ||

Translation

Wherever there is Krishna, the lord of yoga, and wherever there is Arjuna, the archer, there will be prosperity, victory, well-being and sound justice. This is my conviction.

In simple words

The last verse of the Gita, spoken by Sanjaya. Krishna stands for divine wisdom; Arjuna stands for human effort. Success comes when the two work together: wisdom guiding effort.
