What is the Rigveda?

Rik means a verse of praise, and Veda means knowledge. The Rigveda is the oldest of the four Vedas and the source of most of the others: the Samaveda sets its verses to music and the Yajurveda uses many of them in ritual. Its hymns praise the powers of nature, ask about the origin of the universe, and pray for long life, children, cattle, rain, friendship and wisdom.

Its priest is the hotri, who recites hymns to invite the gods to the yajna. Its Brahmanas are the Aitareya and Kaushitaki, and its Upanishads include the Aitareya and Kaushitaki Upanishads. Only one recension (shakha) survives complete, the Shakala.

How it is organised

Ten books, 1,028 hymns

The Rigveda is a collection (samhita) of hymns called suktas, each made of verses called riks. It is arranged in ten books called mandalas. Every hymn has a known rishi (the seer who "saw" it), a devata (the deity addressed) and a chhandas (metre), such as Gayatri (3 × 8 syllables), Anushtubh (4 × 8) or Trishtubh (4 × 11).

Indigo = the six "family books" (2–7), each from one family of rishis; these are thought to be the oldest. Gold = the other books. Mandala 8 includes 11 extra hymns called the Valakhilya. Labels in the full table below.नीला = छह "कुल मण्डल" (2–7), हर एक किसी एक ऋषि-कुल का; इन्हें सबसे प्राचीन माना जाता है। सुनहरा = अन्य मण्डल। मण्डल 8 में 11 वालखिल्य सूक्त भी गिने गए हैं।

Who the hymns praise

The main devatas

Indra, about 250 hymns, nearly a quarter of the whole Rigveda: king of the gods, bringer of rain, who kills the drought-serpent Vritra and frees the waters. Agni, about 200 hymns: fire, the messenger between people and gods, present in every home hearth. Soma, about 120 hymns including the whole ninth mandala: the sacred plant-drink and the joy of inspiration.

Others include Varuna (guardian of rta, the cosmic order, and of truthfulness), Mitra (friendship and agreements), Surya and Savitri (the sun), Ushas (dawn, in some of the most beautiful poems), the Ashvins (twin healers), the Maruts (storm winds), Rudra (later identified with Shiva) and Vishnu (who measured the worlds in three strides).

Women rishis also composed hymns, including Lopamudra (1.179), Ghosha (10.39–40), Apala (8.91) and Vak Ambhrini, whose Devi Sukta (10.125) is still recited in worship of the Goddess.

Translation

In the beginning arose the Golden Womb. Once born, he was the one lord of all that exists. He holds up the earth and this sky. To which god shall we offer our worship?

In simple words

The universe begins from a single shining seed of creative power, a picture that later became Brahma's golden egg in the Puranas. The repeated question at the end of each verse, "to which god?", is answered in the hymn's last verse: Prajapati, the lord of creatures.

Two birds on one tree

dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyā samānaṃ vṛkṣaṃ pari ṣasvajāte | tayor anyaḥ pippalaṃ svādv atty anaśnann anyo abhi cākaśīti ||

Translation

Two birds, close companions and friends, cling to the same tree. One of them eats the sweet fruit; the other, not eating, simply watches.

In simple words

The tree is the body. The bird that eats is the individual self, tasting the sweet and bitter fruits of life. The bird that watches is the higher Self, always calm. The Mundaka and Shvetashvatara Upanishads repeat this verse: when the first bird turns and sees the second, its sorrow ends.

In simple words

A roll-call of the rivers of north-west India, from east to west. Several are still known: Shutudri is the Sutlej, Parushni the Ravi, Asikni the Chenab and Vitasta the Jhelum. This is why many Hindus call on these rivers when they bathe: "Gange cha Yamune chaiva..."

Who eats alone, sins alone

Translation

One who eats alone becomes the sole bearer of sin.

In simple words

This whole hymn (10.117) praises generosity: wealth that is not shared is wasted, and a person who feeds only himself is not truly living. The Gita repeats the idea (3.13): those who cook only for themselves eat sin.
