Twelve shrines where Shiva is worshipped as a column of light (jyoti). The Shiva Purana tells how Shiva appeared as an endless pillar of fire that neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find the end of. Traditions differ on the exact site of two of them (Vaidyanath and Nageshwar).
बारह तीर्थ जहाँ शिव की ज्योति-स्तम्भ के रूप में पूजा होती है। शिव पुराण बताता है कि शिव अनन्त अग्नि-स्तम्भ के रूप में प्रकट हुए, जिसका अन्त न ब्रह्मा पा सके न विष्णु। इनमें से दो (वैद्यनाथ और नागेश्वर) के सही स्थान पर परम्पराओं में मतभेद है।

Four abodes at the four corners of India, linked by tradition to Adi Shankaracharya. Visiting all four is a lifetime pilgrimage. (The Himalayan "Chota Char Dham" of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath is a separate circuit.)
भारत के चार कोनों पर चार धाम, जिन्हें परम्परा आदि शंकराचार्य से जोड़ती है। चारों की यात्रा जीवन भर की तीर्थयात्रा मानी जाती है। (हिमालय का "छोटा चार धाम": यमुनोत्री, गंगोत्री, केदारनाथ और बद्रीनाथ, एक अलग यात्रा है।)
