Vedanta

The eleven principal Upanishads

The Upanishads come at the end of each Veda, so they are called Vedanta, "the end of the Veda." More than 200 texts carry the name; tradition lists 108. The 11 below are the oldest and most important, the ones Adi Shankaracharya and later teachers wrote commentaries on. Together with the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras, they form the prasthana traya, the three foundations of Vedanta philosophy.

Many of them teach through stories and conversations: a boy and Death, a father and son, a husband and wife, a teacher and six students. Each section below gives the story in simple words, followed by key verses.

Shukla Yajurveda · 18 verses

The shortest principal Upanishad and the last chapter of the Shukla Yajurveda. In 18 verses it teaches how to live in the world with God in view: see the divine in everything, enjoy with detachment, keep working, and balance practical knowledge with spiritual knowledge. Its first verse is on the main page and its second on the Yajurveda page.

Neither knowledge nor action alone

Isha Upanishad 9

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti ye 'vidyām upāsate | tato bhūya iva te tamo ya u vidyāyāṃ ratāḥ ||

Translation

Those who follow only worldly action (avidya) enter blind darkness. Into even greater darkness go those who delight only in knowledge (vidya).

In simple words

A surprising verse: even spiritual knowledge, if cut off from life and duty, becomes a trap. The verses that follow say you need both: worldly skill to live well, and spiritual wisdom to go beyond death.

Samaveda · 4 sections

"By whom?" Who makes the mind think, the eyes see and the tongue speak? The answer is the Self, which can't be seen because it is the seer. The Upanishad then tells a story: the gods won a battle and became proud. A mysterious spirit (yaksha) appeared. Agni could not burn a single blade of grass it placed before him; Vayu could not blow it away. Then the goddess Uma Haimavati appeared and told Indra that the yaksha was Brahman, by whose power alone the gods had won. Its first verse is on the Samaveda page.

The story of Nachiketa, a boy who meets Death. His father was giving away old, useless cows as charity. Nachiketa asked, "To whom will you give me?" again and again, until his angry father shouted, "To Death!" The boy went to Yama's house and waited three days without food. To make amends, Yama offered three wishes. Nachiketa asked for his father's peace, for the knowledge of the sacred fire, and finally: what happens after death? Yama tried to tempt him with wealth, long life and kingdoms instead. Nachiketa refused them all, so Yama taught him the knowledge of the deathless Self.

Six seekers come to the sage Pippalada with questions. He tells them first to live with him for a year in discipline, and only then ask. The six questions: Where do living beings come from? Which powers support the body? Where does prana (life-breath) come from? What sleeps and what stays awake in us? What does meditation on Om lead to? And where is the Person with sixteen parts? It teaches that a student must be ready before deep answers can help.

Atharvaveda · 3 chapters

A wealthy householder, Shaunaka, asks the sage Angiras: "What is that which, when known, everything becomes known?" Angiras explains that there are two kinds of knowledge. The lower kind includes even the four Vedas and the sciences; the higher is that by which the imperishable is known. This Upanishad gives India its motto, "Satyameva Jayate," and repeats the Rigveda's verse of the two birds on one tree.

Two kinds of knowledge must be known, say the knowers of Brahman: the higher and the lower.

In simple words

Lower knowledge is everything we learn about the world: languages, science, even scripture as information. Higher knowledge is direct realisation of the Self. Both matter, but only the second ends sorrow.

Atharvaveda · 12 verses

Only 12 verses long, yet the Muktika Upanishad says that this one alone is enough for liberation. It explains the syllable Om as four parts matching the four states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and turiya, the pure awareness behind them all. Its verse and a diagram are on the Atharvaveda page. Its second verse contains the Mahavakya ayam ātmā brahma, "this Self is Brahman."

Krishna Yajurveda · 3 sections (vallis)

Three parts: the first is about pronunciation, study and the teacher's farewell advice ("Speak the truth, practise dharma," on the Yajurveda page). The second describes the Self covered by five sheaths. In the third, the boy Bhrigu asks his father Varuna, "Teach me Brahman." Varuna says only: "That from which beings are born, by which they live, and into which they return, seek that." Bhrigu meditates and discovers, step by step, that Brahman is food, then breath, then mind, then understanding, and finally bliss.

Rigveda · 3 chapters

In the beginning there was only the Self. It thought, "Let me create the worlds," and created them, then the cosmic person, and then the senses and their gods: fire became speech, wind became breath, the sun became sight. Finally the Self entered the body through the crown of the head. The Upanishad ends with the Mahavakya prajñānaṃ brahma, "consciousness is Brahman."

Samaveda · 8 chapters

One of the two largest Upanishads, full of stories. Satyakama, a boy who did not know his father, went to a teacher and honestly repeated what his mother told him: "I don't know my lineage; I am Satyakama, son of Jabala." The teacher accepted him at once: "Only a true brahmin would speak such truth." Elsewhere the father Uddalaka teaches his son "Tat tvam asi," and the sage Sanatkumara teaches Narada that happiness lies only in the infinite. Several of its verses are explained on the Samaveda page.

Shukla Yajurveda · 6 chapters

"The great forest teaching," the longest Upanishad. Its hero is the sage Yajnavalkya, who wins a great debate at King Janaka's court, answering questions from many scholars including the woman philosopher Gargi. When he decides to renounce the world, he offers to divide his property between his two wives. His wife Maitreyi asks, "If the whole earth full of wealth were mine, would it make me immortal?" "No." "Then what use is it to me? Teach me what you know." It also contains "Asato ma sad gamaya" and "Aham brahmasmi" (both on the main page).

We love others for the sake of the Self

na vā are patyuḥ kāmāya patiḥ priyo bhavaty ātmanas tu kāmāya patiḥ priyo bhavati |

Translation

Truly, dear one, a husband is not dear for the husband's sake; he is dear for the sake of the Self.

In simple words

Yajnavalkya goes on: wife, children, wealth, the gods, the whole world, all are dear because of the Self. The love we feel for anyone is really the one Self recognising itself in another. So, he says, the Self is what must be seen, heard, reflected on and meditated upon.

tad etad evaiṣā daivī vāg anuvadati stanayitnur da da da iti | dāmyata datta dayadhvam iti ||

Translation

This is what the divine voice of thunder repeats: "Da! Da! Da!" Control yourselves, give, be compassionate.

In simple words

Gods, humans and demons each asked Prajapati for teaching. He said one syllable, "Da," to each. The gods, who were pleasure-loving, heard damyata, control yourselves. Humans, who were greedy, heard datta, give. Demons, who were cruel, heard dayadhvam, be kind. Each of us needs the lesson that fits our weakness. T. S. Eliot used these words to end his poem The Waste Land.

Shvetashvatara Upanishad

Krishna Yajurveda · 6 chapters

Taught by the sage Shvetashvatara, this Upanishad brings together knowledge, yoga and devotion to a personal God, whom it calls Rudra or Shiva. It gives some of the earliest instructions for meditation (posture, breath, a quiet place), and ends with one of the earliest uses of the word bhakti, devotion to God and to the guru (6.23). It also repeats the two-birds verse.
