What is the Yajurveda?

Yajus means a sacrificial formula, usually in prose. The Yajurveda is the working manual of the adhvaryu, the priest who actually builds the altar, kindles the fire and makes the offerings, saying the right words at each step. It covers the daily fire offerings, the new-moon and full-moon rites, the soma sacrifice, the building of the great fire altar, and royal ceremonies such as the Rajasuya and Ashvamedha.

But it is not only ritual. It also contains some of the most loved prayers in Hinduism: the Rudram to Shiva, the Shanti mantra for peace in all creation, the Shiva Sankalpa prayer for a good mind, and the Isha Upanishad.

White and Black Yajurveda

Tradition tells a story. The sage Yajnavalkya quarrelled with his teacher Vaishampayana, who asked him to give back everything he had learned. Yajnavalkya vomited out the knowledge, and the other students, taking the form of partridges (tittiri), ate it up: that became the Taittiriya, or Black, Yajurveda. Yajnavalkya then prayed to the Sun, who taught him a fresh, "white" Yajurveda.

Its Upanishads include the Taittiriya, Katha, Shvetashvatara and Maitri.

May there be peace in the heavens, peace in the sky, peace on earth. Peace in the waters, peace in the healing herbs, peace in the trees. Peace in all the gods, peace in Brahman, peace in everything. Peace itself be peaceful. May that peace come to me.

In simple words

The prayer starts from the sky and comes down to the earth, water and plants, and only at the very end asks for peace for oneself. Inner peace is connected to peace in nature and society. This is recited at the end of almost every Hindu ceremony.

Translation

Doing your work here, you should wish to live a hundred years. For you there is no other way than this. In this way, action does not bind a person.

In simple words

The Vedas do not ask us to run away from life. Live long and stay active, but work in the spirit of the first verse: knowing everything belongs to God, without greed. This is the seed of the Gita's karma yoga.

That bright eye, dear to the gods, rises in the east. May we see for a hundred autumns, live for a hundred autumns, hear for a hundred autumns, speak for a hundred autumns, and live without dependence for a hundred autumns, and even more than a hundred.

May my mind have good intentions (Shiva Sankalpa)

Translation

That divine mind which travels far when we are awake, and travels the same way when we are asleep, the far-going light of all lights: may that mind of mine be filled with good intentions.

In simple words

Each of the six verses of this hymn ends with the same wish: tan me manaḥ śivasaṅkalpam astu, "may my mind think good thoughts." The mind is powerful and restless, so the first prayer is to point it towards good.

In simple words

The Rudram opens by bowing even to the fierce side of God, praying that his anger and arrows turn away and become gentle (shiva). It goes on to see Rudra in everyone and everything, and contains the five-syllable mantra namaḥ śivāya. It is chanted at Shiva abhishekam.
