What is the Samaveda?सामवेद क्या है?

Saman means a melody. The Samaveda is a collection of about 1,875 verses, nearly all taken from the Rigveda (mostly from its eighth and ninth books), arranged to be sung during the soma sacrifice by the udgatri priest and his assistants. The words are the Rigveda's; the music is the Samaveda's. Singers stretch vowels, repeat syllables and add sounds like hāu and hoyi (called stobha) to fit the melody.

It has two main parts: the Purvarchika, single verses arranged by deity (Agni, Indra, Soma), and the Uttararchika, groups of verses used in actual rituals. The melodies themselves are kept in song-books called ganas, for singing in the village (gramageya) and in the forest (aranyageya).

Three branches survive: Kauthuma (Gujarat and much of North India), Ranayaniya (Maharashtra and Karnataka) and Jaiminiya (Kerala and Tamil Nadu). Each has its own style of singing, passed down orally.

Where Indian music beginsभारतीय संगीत का उद्गम

From three accents to seven notesतीन स्वर से सप्तक तक

The Natya Shastra, the ancient text on drama and music, says that song (gita) was taken from the Samaveda. In the Gita, Krishna says, "Among the Vedas, I am the Samaveda" (10.22).

नाट्यशास्त्र, नाटक और संगीत का प्राचीन ग्रन्थ, कहता है कि गीत सामवेद से लिया गया। गीता में श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं: "वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि", वेदों में मैं सामवेद हूँ (10.22)।

Ordinary Vedic recitation moves between three pitch accents. Samaveda singers expanded these into a scale, and Indian music traditionally traces its seven notes to this source. The contour on the left is an example, not a specific mantra.साधारण वैदिक पाठ तीन स्वरों में चलता है। सामवेद के गायकों ने इन्हें बढ़ाकर पूरा सप्तक बनाया, और भारतीय संगीत परम्परा से अपने सात स्वरों का स्रोत यहीं मानती है। बाईं ओर की रेखा केवल उदाहरण है, किसी विशेष मन्त्र की नहीं।

The Samaveda's wisdomसामवेद का ज्ञान

The first verse of the Samaveda ("Agna a yahi") is explained on the main page. The Samaveda's two great Upanishads, the Chandogya and the Kena, contain some of the deepest teachings in all of Hinduism. Here are a few.

सामवेद का पहला मन्त्र ("अग्न आ याहि") मुख्य पृष्ठ पर समझाया गया है। सामवेद के दो महान उपनिषद, छान्दोग्य और केन, में हिन्दू धर्म की कुछ सबसे गहरी शिक्षाएँ हैं। यहाँ कुछ प्रस्तुत हैं।

Meditate on Omॐ की उपासना

Chandogya Upanishad 1.1.1छान्दोग्य उपनिषद 1.1.1

ओमित्येतदक्षरमुद्गीथमुपासीत ।
ओमिति ह्युद्गायति तस्योपव्याख्यानम् ॥

om ity etad akṣaram udgītham upāsīta | om iti hy udgāyati tasyopavyākhyānam ||

Translationअनुवाद

One should meditate on the syllable Om as the Udgitha (the chant), for the singer begins the chant with Om. Here is its explanation.

"ॐ" इस अक्षर की उद्गीथ के रूप में उपासना करनी चाहिए, क्योंकि उद्गाता "ॐ" कहकर ही गान आरम्भ करता है। अब उसकी व्याख्या है।

In simple wordsसरल भाषा में

The Upanishad of the singers begins with the sound every chant begins with. Om is treated as the essence of all speech, all music and all the Vedas. That is why nearly every mantra starts with Om.

गायकों का यह उपनिषद उसी ध्वनि से आरम्भ होता है जिससे हर गान आरम्भ होता है। ॐ को सारी वाणी, सारे संगीत और सारे वेदों का सार माना गया है। इसीलिए लगभग हर मन्त्र ॐ से शुरू होता है।

All this is Brahmanसर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म

Chandogya Upanishad 3.14.1छान्दोग्य उपनिषद 3.14.1

सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म तज्जलानिति शान्त उपासीत ।

sarvaṃ khalv idaṃ brahma tajjalān iti śānta upāsīta |

Translationअनुवाद

All this is truly Brahman. Everything is born from it, rests in it and returns to it. Knowing this, one should worship it with a calm mind.

यह सब निश्चय ही ब्रह्म है। सब उसी से जन्मता है, उसी में लीन होता है, और उसी में जीता है (तज्जलान्)। ऐसा जानकर शान्त मन से उसकी उपासना करो।

In simple wordsसरल भाषा में

Tajjalan is a compact word: ja (born from it), la (dissolves into it), an (breathes in it). Like waves rising from, resting in and returning to the ocean, everything comes from and goes back to God. Knowing this brings peace.

तज्जलान् एक संक्षिप्त शब्द है: ज (उससे जन्म), ल (उसमें लय), अन् (उसमें श्वास/जीवन)। जैसे लहरें समुद्र से उठती, उसी में रहतीं और उसी में लौट जाती हैं, वैसे ही सब कुछ ईश्वर से आता और उसी में लौटता है। यह जानना शान्ति देता है।

You are That (Tat Tvam Asi)तत्त्वमसि

Chandogya Upanishad 6.8.7छान्दोग्य उपनिषद 6.8.7

Translationअनुवाद

That which is the finest essence, the whole world has it as its Self. That is the truth. That is the Self. You are That, O Shvetaketu.

वह जो सूक्ष्मतम सार है, यह सारा जगत उसी को आत्मा के रूप में रखता है। वही सत्य है, वही आत्मा है। हे श्वेतकेतु, तुम वही हो।

In simple wordsसरल भाषा में

Young Shvetaketu came home proud after twelve years of study. His father Uddalaka asked him to break open a banyan seed: "What do you see?" "Nothing, sir." "From that invisible essence this great tree grows. That subtle essence is the Self of everything, and you are That." The father repeats the lesson nine times with simple examples like salt dissolved in water.

yo vai bhūmā tat sukhaṃ nālpe sukham asti bhūmaiva sukham |

Translationअनुवाद

The infinite alone is happiness. There is no lasting happiness in the small. The infinite alone is happiness.

जो भूमा (अनन्त, विशाल) है, वही सुख है। अल्प (छोटे, सीमित) में सुख नहीं है। भूमा ही सुख है।

In simple wordsसरल भाषा में

The sage Narada had learned every science but was still unhappy. Sanatkumara tells him that no limited thing, money, fame or possessions, can satisfy us for long, because we always want more. Only the infinite fills the heart.

नारद सभी विद्याएँ पढ़कर भी दुःखी थे। सनत्कुमार उन्हें बताते हैं कि कोई भी सीमित वस्तु, धन, यश या सम्पत्ति, हमें लम्बे समय तक सन्तुष्ट नहीं कर सकती, क्योंकि हमें सदा और चाहिए। केवल अनन्त ही हृदय को भर सकता है।

Translationअनुवाद

By whom is the mind directed to its objects? By whom is the first breath set in motion? By whom is this speech we speak driven? What power directs the eye and the ear?

किसकी प्रेरणा से मन अपने विषयों की ओर जाता है? किसके द्वारा पहला प्राण चलता है? किसकी प्रेरणा से हम यह वाणी बोलते हैं? कौन देव आँख और कान को काम में लगाता है?

In simple wordsसरल भाषा में

The Upanishad is named after its first word, kena, "by whom?" The answer: the Self is the eye of the eye, the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind. You cannot see it as an object, because it is the one who sees.

उपनिषद का नाम उसके पहले शब्द केन ("किसके द्वारा?") पर है। उत्तर है: आत्मा आँख की आँख, कान का कान, मन का मन है। उसे वस्तु की तरह नहीं देखा जा सकता, क्योंकि वही देखने वाला है।
