Ramayana and Mahabharata

The two great epics in simple words: the story of each book, the family tree, the journey to Lanka, and what each character teaches.

Itihasa

Two epics, one purpose

Itihasa means "so indeed it was." The two great epics teach dharma through stories everyone can follow, which is why most Indians learn their values from Rama and Krishna before they ever read a Veda. The Ramayana shows the ideal; the Mahabharata shows the real world, where good people face impossible choices.

Ramayana: the seven kandas

Sage Valmiki's Ramayana, about 24,000 verses in seven books (kandas), is called the adi kavya, the first poem. It is the story of Rama, prince of Ayodhya, and it shows what an ideal son, brother, husband, friend and king looks like. Over the centuries it has been retold in almost every Indian language, including Kamban's Tamil Ramavataram, Krittivas's Bengali Ramayana and Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, and across South-East Asia.

O hunter, may you find no peace for endless years, for you killed one of this pair of krauncha birds while they were lost in love.

In simple words

Valmiki saw a hunter shoot one of a pair of birds, and its mate's cry broke his heart. His grief (shoka) poured out in a new rhythm, and it became the first shloka. Brahma then told him to use this metre to tell Rama's story. Poetry, the tradition says, was born from compassion.

The great epic

Mahabharata: the eighteen parvas

Sage Vyasa's Mahabharata, with about 100,000 verses, is the longest poem in the world, roughly ten times the Iliad and Odyssey combined. It tells the story of the Bharata family, whose cousins, the Pandavas and Kauravas, fight a terrible war over the kingdom of Hastinapura. Around this main story are hundreds of other stories, long teachings on dharma and politics, and the Bhagavad Gita. It is called the fifth Veda.

Unlike the Ramayana's clear hero and villain, almost every character in the Mahabharata is a mix of good and bad. That is its great lesson: dharma is subtle (dharmasya tattvaṃ nihitaṃ guhāyām, "the truth of dharma is hidden in a cave"), and life's choices are rarely simple.

Four Pandavas drank from a lake without answering a yaksha's questions and fell dead. Yudhishthira answered every question. Asked "What is the greatest wonder?" he gave this answer. Pleased, the yaksha (Dharma himself, his father) restored his brothers. We all know we will die, yet we live as if we won't.

This phrase appears several times in the Mahabharata and inspired Mahatma Gandhi. The epic, which describes a great war, also teaches that causing no harm is the highest value. Fighting was allowed only as a last resort, after every peaceful effort failed.
