What are the Puranas?

The Puranas carry the truths of the Vedas to everyone through stories, the way a grandmother teaches values through bedtime tales. Traditionally there are 18 major Puranas (listed on the main page), attributed to Vyasa. Each is meant to cover five subjects (pancha lakshana): creation of the universe, its dissolution and re-creation, the family lines of gods and sages, the ages of the Manus, and the histories of royal dynasties.

Most of what Hindus know about the gods, their forms, their families and their festivals comes from the Puranas: the stories of Krishna's childhood, Shiva and Parvati, Durga and the demons, Ganesha's birth, and the ten avatars of Vishnu.

To the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of power: salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her, again and again.

In simple words

In the Devi Mahatmya this verse repeats many times, each time with a different quality: the Goddess as consciousness, intelligence, sleep, hunger, forgiveness, peace, faith, beauty, compassion, mother. Every good quality in us is a form of the Divine Mother. It is chanted especially during Navratri.

The four yugas

The Puranas describe time as a great cycle, not a straight line. Each cycle has four ages that grow shorter and darker, like a day turning to night, before a new dawn. The chart below is drawn to scale.

Together these make one mahayuga of 4,320,000 years. A thousand mahayugas make one day of Brahma, a kalpa of 4.32 billion years, after which the universe rests for a night of equal length. In his series Cosmos, the astronomer Carl Sagan remarked that Hindu cosmology is the only ancient tradition whose time-scales are as vast as those of modern science.

The ten avatars of Vishnu

Whenever dharma declines, Vishnu takes birth to restore it (Gita 4.7–8). The Bhagavata Purana lists many avatars; these ten are the best known.

1. Matsya

A tiny fish asked King Manu for protection, grew enormous, and warned of a great flood. Manu built a boat with seeds of all life and the seven sages; the fish towed it to safety and rescued the Vedas.

2. Kurma

When gods and demons churned the ocean using Mount Mandara, the mountain began to sink. Vishnu became a giant tortoise and held it on his back.

3. Varahaवराह

The demon Hiranyaksha dragged the Earth to the bottom of the cosmic ocean. Vishnu as a boar dived in, killed him, and lifted the Earth on his tusks.

4. Narasimha

Hiranyakashipu had a boon: no man or beast could kill him, indoors or outdoors, by day or by night. When he tried to kill his son Prahlada for worshipping Vishnu, Vishnu burst from a pillar as half-man, half-lion, at dusk, on the threshold, and ended him.

5. Vamanaवामन

The generous demon king Bali had conquered the three worlds. Vishnu came as a small boy and asked for three steps of land. Bali agreed; the boy grew to cosmic size and covered earth and heaven in two steps. Bali offered his own head for the third.

6. Parashurama

8. Krishna

Born in a prison in Mathura, raised among cowherds in Gokul and Vrindavan, slayer of Kamsa, friend of the Pandavas and teacher of the Gita. The Bhagavata Purana tells his childhood stories: stealing butter, lifting Govardhan hill to shelter the villagers from Indra's storm, and dancing the raas.

9. Buddha or Balarama

Many Puranas list the Buddha as the ninth avatar; some traditions, especially in the south, list Krishna's elder brother Balarama instead.

10. Kalki

The avatar still to come, at the end of Kali Yuga, on a white horse with a sword, to end the age of darkness and begin a new Satya Yuga.

Samudra Manthan: churning the ocean

Gods and demons, needing amrita (the nectar of immortality), agreed to churn the ocean of milk together, using Mount Mandara as the rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. First came a deadly poison, halahala. To save the world, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, which turned blue: he is Neelakantha. Then came treasures, among them Lakshmi, the wish-granting cow Kamadhenu, and the physician Dhanvantari carrying the amrita. Vishnu, as the enchantress Mohini, made sure the gods drank it.

Every great effort first churns up poison before the nectar. Someone has to be willing to absorb the hard part for the good of all.

Dhruva: the steady star

Five-year-old Dhruva was pushed off his father's lap by his stepmother, who told him to pray to Vishnu if he wanted a high place. He went to the forest and meditated with such focus that Vishnu appeared. He was given a place that would never move: the Pole Star, Dhruva Tara.

Hurt can become determination. Steady focus, even from a child, can reach the highest goal.

Markandeya: the boy who conquered death

A sage couple were granted a son who would be brilliant but would live only sixteen years. On his sixteenth birthday, when Yama came with his noose, young Markandeya hugged the Shiva linga. The noose fell around the linga too. Shiva burst out, defeated Yama, and granted the boy eternal youth. This is why Shiva is called Mrityunjaya, conqueror of death.

Faith gives courage in the face of our greatest fear. This story is the background of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.

Bhagiratha brings down the Ganga

King Bhagiratha's 60,000 ancestors had been burned to ashes by a sage's curse; only the heavenly river Ganga could free their souls. After generations of failed attempts, Bhagiratha's long tapas brought Ganga down from heaven. To stop her force from shattering the earth, Shiva caught her in his matted hair and released her gently.

Bhagiratha prayatna", a Bhagiratha effort, still means a near-impossible task finished through persistence."

How Ganesha got his elephant head

Parvati made a boy from turmeric paste and asked him to guard her door. When Shiva returned, the boy stopped him. In anger Shiva cut off his head. Seeing Parvati's grief, Shiva sent his attendants to bring the head of the first creature they found, an elephant, and brought the boy back to life as Ganesha, leader of Shiva's ganas, to be worshipped first before every undertaking.

Duty and loyalty are honoured even when they cause trouble. And wisdom (the elephant) can be the gift that comes out of loss.

The stories behind the festivals

Diwali

Ayodhya lit lamps to welcome Rama home after 14 years. In other traditions it marks Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura (the day before), and Lakshmi's emergence from the churned ocean. Lamps celebrate light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance.14 वर्ष बाद राम के घर लौटने पर अयोध्या ने दीप जलाए।

Holiहोली

Hiranyakashipu's sister Holika, who could not be burned, sat in a fire with Prahlada in her lap. She burned; Prahlada was untouched. The night before Holi, bonfires recall this. The colours next day recall Krishna's play with the gopis.

Navratri and Dussehra

The buffalo demon Mahishasura could not be defeated by any god. The gods' combined power took form as Durga, who fought him for nine nights and killed him on the tenth (Devi Mahatmya). Dussehra also marks Rama's victory over Ravana.

Maha Shivaratri

The night Shiva married Parvati, or the night he appeared as an endless column of fire that neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find the end of (Shiva and Linga Puranas).

Raksha Bandhan

Among several stories: when Krishna cut his finger, Draupadi tore her sari to bind it, and he promised to protect her, a promise he kept when she was insulted in the Kaurava court.

Makar Sankranti

The sun begins its northward journey (uttarayana), considered the most auspicious time. Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows, waited for this day to leave his body.
